Mimika Makes by Mimi

Based in Sofia, Bulgaria, creating and shipping handmade sustainable work to collectors across Bulgaria, the UK, the USA, Germany and Canada.

I am deeply inspired & amazed by the beauty of nature.

Each book I create is crafted with care, using sustainable methods and natural, recycled materials. I believe my work should not harm the Earth, and my intention is to spread kindness to the world.

In an age of mass production, I aim to offer something unique and timeless.

Beyond binding, I am constantly experimenting on mixing different techniques into a piece - embroidering, extracting plant colors, developing my own natural textile printing techniques, making paper and so on.

With every stitch, fold and motion, and through the visual and audio films I have been creating and filming since a kid, I weave my love into preserving these ancient crafts.

The Cacao Journals

Naturally dyed with cacao husks.
An upcycled "waste" from my day job as a cacao/chocolate maker, I experimented with making a natural dye and printing paste for this collection of journals.

I make my own book cloth using japanese Kozo paper and wheat paste.
- hand sewn 100% recycled paper pages with cotton thread.
- cotton & linen covers, naturally dyed & printed with handmade stamps.

The Flower Books

A special collection of 16 journals, made for the 16 ladies in a foster shelter in Uganda.
I wanted each girl to have their own place to write their dreams and bloom as flowers do, hence each journal is a unique handmade floral embroidery with a special place in my heart.

The Botanical Dye Journey

My natural dye journey started on Easter 2024 when I decided to dye my eggs with natural dyestuff. I fell in love with the madder root results and it sparked my curiosity on how to implement it in my work.

GROWING A SMALL BATCH OF INDIGO

I tried growing some dye plants in my tiny bedroom apartment balcony.

In the end I managed to extract and dye some blue colors from my Indigo plant using the fresh leaf and salt rub method.

I have also dyed with carrot tops, forsythias, madder root, avocado skins & pits, pomegranate peels, curcuma, black tea, acorns & cacao husks.

The Refillable Journals

I love designing practical and lasting things. This is the limited Winter Wonderland collection I created with refillable hard covers and recycled paper journal refills.
I am currently working on prototypes of a new version of soft "leather like" sustainable refillable covers.

Teaching & keeping the craft alive

In 2025 I ran various bookbinding workshops across Bulgaria, teaching adults and kids how to make their own little notebooks using lokta paper and recycled materials.

Custom Orders

Collaborating closely with my clients, I design custom iterations and shape every detail bringing their vision to life with a precise selection of high-quality materials.
